Surface Measurement Systems Ltd (SMS) is the technological market leader in moisture measurements and vapour sorption techniques. SMS also develops and engineers innovative experimental techniques and instrumentation for physico-chemical characterisation of complex solids.
We are the world leaders in dynamic vapor sorption and inverse gas chromatography technology instrumentation and solutions, providing professional world-class scientific and technical support for our international customers. By carefully controlling, measuring and analysing the physicochemical interaction of vapours with solid samples such as powders, fibres and films, SMS can help solve problems in Research and Development, such as stability studies and drying performance, through to manufacturing & quality control.
Our range of characterisation instruments and scientific/engineering techniques has helped solve difficult problems in the pharmaceuticals, biomaterials, polymers catalysts, chemical, cosmetics and food industries, and are used by hundreds of leading laboratories and universities throughout the world.
Instrument features include:
• Unrivalled Accuracy and Repeatability
• Fully Automated Operation
• User Friendly Windows NT Software
• Comprehensive Data Analysis Software
• Up to 10 Different Probe Gas Molecules
• Full Humidity (or other Vapour) Control
• In-Situ Sample Preconditioning
• Wide Temperature Range
• Column Packing Accessory
• Pulse and Frontal Methods
Standard methods for surface energy, heat of sorption, phase transition, sorption isotherms and frontal methods.

The SMS microscope VGI is a custom-built accessory that allows the user to precisely control the temperature and humidity environment of a microscopy sample. The VGI2000M is designed for use with ultra-long working distance objectives, having working distances of 6mm or greater and using standard microscope slides as the sample mounting. For optical microscopy, the illumination techniques of transmission and reflection are supported whilst the viewing techniques of bright-field, dark-field and cross-polarised light can be applied. The VGI can also be used in conjunction with FTIR and Raman microscopes.
